What is laser therapy?

Laser therapy is an exciting new technology being embraced by both veterinarians and human doctors. The effects of these therapies are photochemical, meaning the light from the laser itself does all the work. This light penetrates deep into tissues of targeted areas to stimulate the damaged cells of these areas to produce more energy. This increase in cellular activity does several things:
  • increases blood flow to areas of interest
  • reduces inflammation
  • reduces swelling
  • helps reduce chronic and acute pain
  • accelerates the healing process
  • aids in the release of the body's own pain relievers, endorphins

All of these help to not only stimulate healing but shorten the healing time for various diseases and injuries, all the while making our patients more comfortable in the process.

What can be treated with laser therapy?

What can't be treated is more the question! A whole host of illnesses and injuries can benefit from cold laser therapy. Just a few areas where laser therapy can be used include:

  • Chronic arthritis
  • Sprains, strains and other ligament injuries
  • Traumatic wounds, especially non-healing wounds
  • Post-op incisions
  • Skin lesions or abrasions, including acral lick granulomas
  • Fractures
  • Joint injuries and other musculoskeletal diseases
  • Nerve and spinal injuries
  • Aural (ear) hematomas

The two areas that we have really seen these benefits in our hospital are chronic arthritis and wound healing. Many of our clients have witnessed these first hand and have been thrilled.

What should I expect with the treatments?

Each new case will be evaluated by one of our veterinarians who will design a treatment plan tailored to the individual needs of your pet. After this initial exam the treatments will then be administered by one of our technicians right in the exam room with the owner present. The probe will be placed directly on the area of interest in multiple spots delivering the healing light to the whole area of injury. While this process is painless, some animals do experience a tingling sensation that they soon become comfortable with.

The day following the first one or two treatments, pets may be mildly stiff and sore as the healing effects start to work. This is usually transient and easily controlled with pain medication, if needed. The real benefits are seen after the initial few treatments.

At the start, most illness and injuries will require multiple treatments a week. Visits are gradually reduced and spread further apart as a maintenance dose is reached. This is often dictated by the patients themselves and their response to the treatments. Due to this, our veterinarians will make regular checks ups during the treatment plan to adjust visits and doses as needed. This can also work in the alternate direction. In cases of flare ups or re-injury, treatments can be increased and tapered if required.

It is important to note, not every animal will respond as we hope. But for those that do, laser therapy offers a wonderful addition to any treatment plan.
